BOYS DIVISION V (10:40 a.m.)
Barring a final-day resurgence, five-time defending state champion Woodcrest Christian's dynasty could be coming to a close. St. Margaret's (SS) of San Juan Capistrano has been lights-out superb this fall, with its recent victory at the SS Finals the latest conquest in a storybook season. Junior Billy Gaudreau, the SS winner, and sophomore Brandon Price have been quality leaders for the budding national small-schools power that arrives here as the clear favorite for the crown. Desert Christian of Lancaster, the SS runner-up, has Scott Acton pacing a crew that has regained its health and come on well in recent weeks to be St. Margaret's chief threat. Familiar foes Flintridge Prep, Woodcrest Christian (led by Myles Scarano) and Chadwick are all expected to battle for the final plaque, along with North Coast Section rivals The Urban School, headed by title contender Cole Williams, and St. Joseph, paced by Gabe Arias, the only freshman male to appear in the state rankings.
A downright sensational battle is expected in the quest for the individual championship, with St. Margaret's Gaudreau projected as a very slight favorite over The Urban School's Williams. York School's James Palaniuk, who has dazzled up north this fall, and Big Valley Christian's Nathan Jackson, who has raced sparingly but excelled while doing so, are additional high-quality threats. Palaniuk won by a lopsided margin at the CCS Finals while Jackson was 100 seconds clear of the field at the SJS Finals.
