Coach Visokey on Don Bosco Invitational

RESULTS OF DON BOSCO INVITATIONAL

Team,

The attached link is the results of yesterday’s Don Bosco Tech Invitational.

It was a very exciting day with several school records and personal best times for just about everyone. This meet clearly shows the value of our increased strength training this summer, and of the value of the many summer miles that were put in. Our team time of 77:55 is the first sub 80 minute team time in the history of Desert Christian cross country. It broke the previous school record set last year at Bell-Jeff (81:28) by a whopping 3 minutes and 33 seconds. As you are aware we won the Small School Division, and were the 4th fastest team of the day, Damien 77:03 (ranked number 10 in Division 3), Redlands East Valley 77:25 (ranked number 7 in Division 2), and Don Bosco Tech (ranked number 1 in Division 4). Only 53 seconds separated us from winning the entire meet. Clearly it was a fabulous day that even exceeded my very high expectations.

Since everyone was fabulous I’m going to address all of you in this e-mail.

Keep in mind that the course was slightly altered this year resulting in an additional 10 seconds to make the course a full 3 miles according to the meet director, Sal Perez. He said it was just short of three miles the past two years, and he wanted it exactly 3 miles this year.

Scott Acton – Despite going out a little slower than he would like (5:14 in the 1st mile) Scott ran the fastest time ever for DCHS at this Invitational and the second fastest time on any course in school history. His time of 15:07 only sits behind Tim Smith’s 15:02 at Bell-Jeff in 2002. Scott has an outstanding chance of breaking that time in 2 weeks at Bell-Jeff. Scott won the Small School Division race and was the 5th fastest runner of the day. Scott ran the final 2 miles in 9:53.

Bryan Curtis – Ran a personal best 15:25 in his senior season debut. Bryan had never broken 16 minutes prior to this meet. He placed second only 18 seconds behind Scott. This was clearly his best cross country performance ever. His previous best was a 16:11 at Mt. Sac last year. It was the 8th fastest time on any course in the 21 year history of Desert Christian cross country.

Thomas Waters – Ran a personal best 15:27 in his senior season debut. Thomas had never broken 16 minutes prior to this meet. He placed third only 20 seconds behind Scott. This was clearly his best cross country performance ever. His previous best was 16:11 at Bell-Jeff last year. It was the 9th fastest time on any course in the 21 year history of Desert Christian cross country.

Zac Patten – This was by far the best race Zac has ever run. Prior to this year he had never broke 17 minutes before, let alone 16. His time was 15:55 finishing in 7th place. This is the race I have been waiting for from Zac, and in my opinion it was the varsity performance of the day. His splits of 5:24, 5:13, and 5:17 were outstanding.

Andrew Starksen – Andrew’s personal best prior to Bosco was 17:06 at Mt. Sac last year. His time at Bosco was 18:19 last year. This year he ran an outstanding 16:01 for an 11th place finish. Any team would be excited to have the number 5 runner at 16:01. Congratulations Andrew!

Ray Biggerstaff – With only two weeks of training under his belt, Ray’s 16:55 performance was well beyond mine and I believe his expectations. Wait until you see how fast he will be in about a month. Great job Ray, you were our 6th fastest runner on the day.

Jonathan Kuzichev – I will admit it, Jonathan you stunned me with your 17:06 performance. It was his first ever top 7 team finish with everyone healthy, by far his best time ever, and 1 minute and 12 seconds faster than last year. It was another of the best performances of the day.

James Gibson – What an outstanding freshman day view for James. His 17:22 clocking was the 4th fastest freshman time in school history, and he is the first freshman who is not named Jeremy Acosta to break into the top DCHS 5 freshman times ever. Prior to this run, Jeremy held all 5 of the top 5 freshman times. James was our 8th fastest runner on the day.

Josh DeVore – Ran exactly the same time as last year (17:29) despite understandably having limited training for the last 3 weeks. Josh went out in 6:15 and then ran the second mile in 5:25, while finishing up with a final mile of 5:49. Josh is well on his way to having an outstanding season.

Jeff Marshall – Congratulations Jeff, you did it! This is the first time Jeff has ever run under 18 minutes. His time of 17:48 was accomplished despite being sick from motion sickness on the way to the meet. Under the circumstances he far exceeded my expectations.

Wyatt Carr – Ran a personal best 18:36, but even more impressive were his splits of 6:06, 6:15, and 6:15. Great job Wyatt, you are a tremendous asset to our team.

Jax Gorman – Not once last year did Jax break 20 minutes yet he breaks 19 in his first meet in 2011. His time of 18:42 is the direct result of outstanding summer participation and a will to succeed. I’m proud of you, Jax.

Kyle Pounder – Let’s put this race in perspective. Kyle’s previous best was 20:36 at Vasquez last year. He ran 19:03 in his first race this year. His time was over 4 minutes faster than last year at Bosco. Kyle was fabulous yesterday and his summer commitment showed.

Stephen Crockett – As a freshman with only a week and a half of training, Stephen is clearly a star in the making. His time of 19:09 in his high school day view was absolutely outstanding.

Joe Ricketson – I was very impressed with Joe. With his limited training during the summer with the team considered, this performance was outstanding. Anybody would be proud to run a 19:27 in his high school day view. Mark my words, “Joe is a star in the rising.” Also, Joe’s demonstrated Christian character around his teammates and coaches is an inspiration to us all.

Mikael Mansini – Mikael’s best time last year was 22:16 at Vasquez and this year he starts out with a 19:33. I would call the performance fabulous and another example of the effects of an outstanding summer commitment. Mikael you are amazing!

John Crocker – Ran a personal best 22:00 which was 55 seconds better than any race last year and 5 minutes and 14 seconds faster than he ran at Bosco in 2010. John’s summer commitment showed. Great job John!

Nick Nystrom – Nick ran 56 seconds faster than last year on this slightly longer course. His time of 22:13 was fantastic. Congratulations on a great race.

I have attached your splits from the Don Bosco Tech Invitational. We will go over them at practice on Monday. I have also attached an updated school records chart. There were many changes made to it as a result of this cross country meet.

I am very proud of all of you. Just watching you constantly praying without being prompted to do so was a blessing. I also witnessed several of you wishing the person on the starting line a great race. We are a great team and we need to be humble about it. As the season continues, let us not forget who gives us the gift to run and the will to compete. It is only through him that we were able to accomplish all that we did at the Don Bosco Tech Invitational.

In His Service,

Coach Visokey
